Hossein Rezvani makes 21st century Persian carpets. He grew up to appreciate the intrinsic role the Persian rug plays in Iranian art and culture but it wasn’t until 2007 that he had the idea to revolutionise the Persian carpet. It took him several years to find the right weavers to craft his high quality designs — which are made with up to 1 million knots per square meter — and set up his Hamburg-based company Hossein Rezvani Design OHG. The rugs, which are handwoven in Isfahan, have revived some of Iran's most treasured weaving designs and have won a number of Carpet Design Awards at Domotex Hannover.

1. How would you summarize the range or ranges of rugs that your brand produces?

We offer 21st century Persian carpets — a combination of the finest Persian quality made in Isfahan, Iran, combined with a contemporary yet classic design.

2. How would you describe the style behind your brand? What makes it stand out from other brands?

I try to create pieces that a timeless, in which you can see where they originate from. To me the heritage of a carpet and its design are mandatory. Persian roots are a must in any of my designs. I think we are perfectly placed, not too modern, not too classic, a transitional design that last for generations, that is the ultimate goal.

3. Where are your carpets made?

My carpets are made in Isfahan, Iran.

4. Who designs your rugs and what has been the inspiration behind some of the latest collections?

I design every single rug myself. Heritage and tradition are the most important design guidelines. Traditional Persian patterns are my preferred design inspiration but also travel. One of my latest designs — the Heriz Majorelle — a traditional bold and geometric Heriz design combined with the colors of the Yves Saint Laurent garden, Jardin Majorelle.

5. What is the secret of a successful carpet?

I think it is about getting the right balance of tradition and modern design elements together. Another aspect of course is the color composition in each design.

6. Which one of your rugs is your favorite and why?

Well that’s a difficult question, as I design all carpets myself, it’s like asking who’s your favorite child! They are all my babies but I have to admit my first piece, the Tabriz, is very special to me and another new design, Negin, also came out beautifully

7. What kind of interior projects have you worked on in the past or are working on now?

We have worked on the several hotels and a special project was the Fairmont in my hometown of Hamburg. As a child I always went there and it was a special honor for me when they asked me to design carpets for the main lobby and the reception. We are currently working on another great hotel project in Abu Dhabi, where we will install great pieces in the presidential suites and some major meeting rooms.

8. Can you describe one of the most exciting projects you have worked on in the last five years?

That has to be a palace in Saudi. I got sent the floorplan of the house with spaces which were huge — men’s majlis of 295 sqm, ladies majlis sized 200sqm, the male dining area was 295sqm and so on, we could not believe the dimensions of this villa. So we made some really special oversize carpets for that project. Sadly I never found out whose palace it was, but the images that my interior design partner sent where just unbelievable!

9. Are your designs already stocked in China or anywhere in Asia? If not how important is it to you that they are in the future?

Yes, I have worked with a retailer in Beijing for 3 years now and the Chinese market is very important to me. The Chinese appreciate Persian carpets and know a great deal about Isfahan carpets. So when we first offered my designs, the feedback was amazing. The Chinese market is evolving and people are looking for design and quality and that is where my carpets come into play.

10. What new collections are you working on for the future?

I have just showed three new collections at Domotex in Hanover, so I am just at the start of the brainstorming process for a new collection for 2018. Inspiration and good things sometimes need time to develop, so in June you can ask me again what I came up with….
